The name Buyepongo which translates “to provide a ruckus”–which certainly describes the scene on the dance floors of Los Angeles whenever the band launches into its dizzyingly energetic, instantly infectious rhythms. But it also describes Buyepongo Riotous mash-up of influences, which absorbs hip-hop, punk, funk, and jazz sounds into a delirious tropical blend of styles from across the Latin American diaspora. Like its name, the band is part hybrid, part invention, something untranslatable that nevertheless perfectly captures its uniquely vibrant spirit.
Buyepongo has shared the stage with acts such as Miguel, Ty Dolla Sign, Warren G, Common, ChicanoBatman, Quantic, Ondatropica, Ozomatli, Booker T, Celso Piña, Os Mutantes, Sister Nancy, Dead Prez, CutChemist, Beatnuts, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, Antibalas,and Punta Cartel .They have performed in diverse venues and festivals such as El Rey Theater, Grand Performances, World Cafe PhiladelphiaPA, KEXP, The Fillmore, Tropicalia Music Festival , Lightning in a Bottle Music Festival, Grand Park, LevittPavillion’s Summer Music Series, International Accordion festival, SXSW Official Showcase 2015.
In 2018 they were selected to be Official Cultural DIplomats for the United State through the American Music Abroad programs. They Toured through mainland China in 2018 and Azerbaijan in 2019. In 2020 they were invited through the Arts Envoy to tour in Equatorial Guinea. They had a tour scheduled in Turkey in April 2020 But was canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Durning the pandemic Buyepongo has continued to record and release music as well as participate in Virtual concerts such as LACMA summer concert series and Hollywood Forever Day of the dead Festival. As things are slowly opening up They are ready for new adventures and bring the Buyangu to dancefloors around the world!
